'Spirit of EDSA lies in uplifting poors,' say's Arroyo

The President made the statement Monday, the 22nd anniversary of the 1986 People Power uprising that ended the Marcos dictatorship, as anti-government groups took to the streets to press for her resignation over alleged corruption in government.

"Ito ang tunay na diwa ng People Power, tulungan ang pinakamahihirap [This is the true spirit of People Power, helping the poorest of the poor]," she said in a speech at the launch of the "Ahon Pamilyang Pilipino [Rise Up Filipino Family]," a government anti-poverty initiative, in Caloocan City.

Arroyo also made an appeal to help the victims of heavy flooding in the Eastern Visayas and Bicol regions.

"Ang nangyayari sa ating mga kapatid sa Bicol, Samar, at Leyte, kaya bahagi ng diwa ng EDSA. Hinihingi natin doon sa mas may kaya, tulungan natin ang mga kapatid natin na nagdudusa dahil sa malubhang ulan [What is happening to our brethren in Bicol, Samar and Leyte is part of the spirit of EDSA. We ask those with more, help our brethren who are suffering because of the heavy rains]," she said.

Arroyo has been under pressure to step down after a Senate witness linked her husband, Jose Miguel, and former Commission on Elections chairman Benjamin Abalos Sr. to the alleged overpricing and kickbacks surrounding the $329-millio contract between the government and China's ZTE Corp. for the national broadband network (NBN) project.

She ordered the contract cancelled after the Senate began its inquiry into the NBN deal.

Over the weekend, Arroyo admitted she had been informed of irregularities in the contract but had allowed its signing ostensibly to preserve the country’s relations with China.

The spirit of EDSA lies in uplifting poors, but not with a morally bankrupt administration. One cannot begin a full flush of idealistic reforms when one is devoid, or gravely impaired, of moral precepts. At the least, Gloria has lived up to what her allies have called her: evil, and the luckiest b*tch around.

Then put someone who's not corrupt and evil. We are not a nation 90 million useless idiots who are as equally corrupt and evil like the powers-that-be.

So long as Gloria remains at the core of all the evil in the Palace, not even the call of the CBCP for truth and accountability won't hold ground. It will just abate with the wind, like fart.

as you say with this kind of government it is very impossible that people vote for the public servant they want money is so powerful right now and so many Filipino people are in the state the we can call the poorest of the poor...

Well, it may be difficult, but I don't think it's very impossible. I don't have the right to take away from my countrymen the chance to change their lives for better and not for worse.
